Wilderness Survival
The number of people using wilderness areas is increasing. Recreational activities such as hiking, backpacking, and rafting have mushroomed into a huge industry. This is a hopeful sign that many people are participating in activities connected with the natural environment. Unfortunately, this enthusiasm is not always tempered with the skills and understanding that is necessary to ensure all adventures end with fun and safety. Most of the mishaps that occur are needless. With some basic survival skills training, we can overcome and competently undertake most survival situations. The goal of the program is to give the participant a better understanding of the risks involved with outdoor activities in the wilderness, and a chance to practice some basic survival skills. Visitors will be shown ways to survive in the woods and what to pack for hiking. Information on food, water, clothes, survival kits, first aid, signaling, and how to build a shelter and a fire will be discussed. This event is useful for the whole family. Please bring hiking boots and a personal survival kit, if you have one. Advanced registration is required. Sponsored by the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. For more information, please contact Kara at 902-384-3420 or nrec@gov.ns.ca.
