Visitor Notices: The Department of Natural Resources is redeveloping of the Graves Island Provincial Park.

While Graves Island undergoes many changes, the priorities of the park remain resource conservation and recreational development. Last year, about five hectares of dead or dying white spruce were cut as part of an ecological restoration project to promote a more diverse forest ecosystem.

Of ongoing concern is the risk of fire hazard created by the harvested white spruce, particularly in areas next to campsites 700 to 707 inclusive. As a result of this, we have closed these campsites for the 2008 camping season and have chipped the harvested material left in this area to reduce the fire hazard.

Campers should be careful with campfires and open flame when they are in the park. Occasionally, if high fire hazard conditions occur during the camping season, campfire bans will be implemented.

Park Info:Graves Island park
Joined to the mainland by a short causeway, the island is typical of many of the small islands found along Nova Scotia's Atlantic coast. This quiet ocean-side campground has long been a popular vacation spot for Nova Scotians and visitors alike.

The campground is an excellent base for outdoor adventures including ocean kayaking and biking along the South Shore as well as day tripping to the area's many attractions.

Facilities and Services

The park is open from May 15 until October 12 (for the 2009 season), offering a 84 site campground, walking trails, picnic area, swimming area, playground and boat launch. The campground has water outlets and a trailer dump station.

Camping reservations can be made beginning April 2, 2009. See Reservations for details and conditions.

Walk in Tenting Sites
The large walk-in tenting sites are located along an woodland roadway, a short walk (100 m) from the main parking lot. These sites offer a sense of remoteness in a convenient location.
